Schindelei is a family of urban furniture designed and built for the municipality of Zirl, Austria. Combining seating and tree planters, the project creates a a place to pause, meet, and spend time together in front of the B4 cultural centre.
Three angular planters anchor the ensemble. Two connect through an arrangement of movable benches, while the third stands independently. Timber shingles wrap both the planters and the bench bodies, bringing a familiar element of alpine building culture into the public square. Their overlapping texture lends a tactile quality to the faceted forms. Each bench carries its own colour code, echoed on the adjoining planter. When the benches are moved, they reveal coloured surfaces at these connections, leaving behind a visual imprint of their previous position. The ensemble unfolds as a spatial puzzle: colours suggest relationships between the pieces, while new arrangements create different places to sit and gather. Yellow, red, and pink accents extend across the planter rims and between the seating slats, linking the individual elements through a shared palette. The furniture forms part of Zirl’s “Dorfoase”, a wider initiative shaped through a participatory process with local children and young people, whose wishes called for more colour, greenery, and places to relax. Developed alongside Baupiloten and the municipality, the intervention brings these ideas into everyday use. Conceived as movable elements, the pieces can be combined in different configurations and relocated as needs change. Schindelei explores how a modest intervention can open up new possibilities for a familiar place, inviting people to make the square their own.
