Cappella del Suono In DialogueAssociazione Culturale Edoardo Gellner • Pavilion •
Corte di Cadore, Italy • 06/26
Following its first installation in the grain fields of Lunano and its encounter with urban life in Munich, the Cappella del Suono found a new setting within the alpine landscape of Borca di Cadore. Installed on the lower forecourt of Nostra Signora del Cadore, the pavilion entered into dialogue with the church designed by Edoardo Gellner in collaboration with Carlo Scarpa. Part of the former ENI village commissioned by Enrico Mattei, the site places the small timber structure within a modernist exploration of architecture’s relationship with landscape and collective life.
Here, the idea of a chapel acquires a different resonance. Beside an established place of worship, the Cappella offers an open space of contemplation through listening. Its permeable enclosure frames the surroundings without separating visitors from them, allowing the forecourt to become a place of pause and heightened awareness. The relationship between the two structures unfolds through their proximity and the experience of moving between them. The Cappella’s third installation explores how the same structure can acquire new meaning through its surroundings, bringing a contemporary experiment in timber into conversation with the architectural heritage of the Dolomites.Suspended timber slats form a floating curtain whose uneven lower edge softens the pavilion’s geometry. Tuned to the notes of the C major scale, the elements produce layered sounds as they move and meet in the wind. Small cavities at their lower ends act as resonance chambers, giving the timber a voice that can recall distant bells. This acoustic presence lends the dialogue with the neighbouring church a sensory dimension, while changing daylight continually alters the openness of the enclosure.Presented from 28 June to 28 September 2026, the installation was organised by the Associazione Culturale Edoardo Gellner and Corte delle Dolomiti with the support of Adriano Oggiano. A finalist in the Wood Architecture Prize by Klimahouse 2026, the pavilion also formed part of the programme of Knock on Wood!
